The town, is one of the towns from Gorj district situated in North-East side of it, being traversed of the parallel 45 15’ and the meridian 23 35’.
NOVACI area is a depressive traversed on direction North- South of GILORT river and found in immediate nearby of the PARANG mountains that are famous with their peak PARANG of 25,8 meters height , it is the third as height of the ROMANIAN peaks .
The centre of the town is seated at 600 meters height at the crossroad of the national road BENGESTI- SEBES , the highest alpines road in our country 2100 meters height in URDELE halt (stop ) and country side road CURTISOARA –POLOVRAGI . NOVACI is at 42 Kilometres of TG. JIU ,the residence of district GORJ.
NOVACI is also famous through the mountain resort, RANCA, that is seated at 1600 meters height.
The surface of the NOVACI town, from administrative point of view is of 24.500 ha; 48%being covered of vegetation.
Locality history: The first documentary certifying of the laying of NOVACIS is on the 9th of MARCH 1502,setting lived by the free shepherd peasants and people who were working on the farming.
Later, NOVACI becomes a big, commune that other villages will add it . the locality is extremely appreciated by the visitors before the first world war as a mountain climatic picturesque and clean resort, having many installations for the manufacture of the wood, popular bank.
In 1939 the first hydrocentrale is given in utilization on the GILORT river . On the 1st of JULY 1968, NOVACI becomes town.
The population of the town is approximate of 6427 of inhabitants.
In the most part, the population from NOVACI is occupied with the farming work, the others working in industry, health domain, education, banks, buildings and service performance.
The health: In NOVACI there is a very good endowed town hospital and it has got the best experts in domain. Here, there is also an asyhem of old folk.
The education-There are two schools with the 1st –VIIIth grade, a high school and four kinder-gardens.
The culture: NOVACI has got one of the largest and the most beautiful Cultural community-centre of our district where the ensemble of songs and popular dances “NEDEIA” laureate of many national and international festivals.
The church-The inhabitants religion is orthodox so that in town there are 10 churches that were build in neobyzantine style.
The economy-The farming, especially the raising of small and big cattle is represented very well but the culture of grower plants is not at the big well-balance because of the mountain ground. Here , all the people cultivate fruit trees and vine very much.
The industry-Is weak developed although the area includes small strong stone of building. The performance industry is represented through a cheese factory, butcher’s, baker’s etc. But the most part of it processes in our own administration.
The power potential of GILORT is turned to account through the five hydrocentrales.
In town there are a lot of justice, police, firemen, gendarmerie, banks institutions and an institution of children protection, too. NOVACI offers to its visitors a picturesque and rest place, being endowed by hotels, lodgings, holiday houses with high level of comfort because it is seated between the picturesque mountains and hills with full streets of fir trees and beautiful flowers.
